But the fun starts really with the chapter introducing the masked bandit where their many characteristics are introduced, including folklore and early history with man. Beavers: A Wildlife Handbook by Kim Long. We have all been waiting for a good natural history book on beavers and Kim Long has done yet another species profile that rehabilitators will want. As with his other natural history books, this one includes folklore from Native Americans including the native words for beaver in many languages. For those doing environmental education, this book is rich with material. For the rehabber, we have excellent drawings of beaver anatomy, excellent comparisons and drawings of closely related species like Nutria, Muskrat as well as the "unbeaver”, Aplodontia. This book is a solid source or information on reproduction, food, communications, predators, locomotion, survival skills, and territory. Along with those chapters, there is one on beaver diseases and parasites. Hand-Rearing Birds by Laurie Gage, DVM and Rebecca Duerr. This is a broad based book that includes native and zoo-species birds. Pretty much any group of birds you can think of are in the table of contents. The book covers standard hand-raising methods and equipment. The authors have a lot of experience between them. Laurie Gage, DVM, has been the veterinarian for Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo, CA for decades.
